June 12: Hon. Matthew Alani Oyeniyi Honors Nigeria’s Democratic Journey
As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day this June 12, I, Hon. Matthew Alani Oyeniyi, former Councilor of Ibadan North Ward 12 and hopeful for the Ibadan North Federal House of Representatives seat, celebrate the enduring spirit of our nation’s democracy and call for a strengthened commitment to grassroots governance and political awareness.
June 12 is more than a date; it is a powerful symbol of the sacrifices made by our heroes, especially the late Chief MKO Abiola, whose historic 1993 presidential election victory remains a beacon of hope for all Nigerians.
It reminds us of how far we have journeyed and the challenges that still lie ahead.
Democracy is truly the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. But for it to thrive, the benefits must be deeply felt at the grassroots — where ordinary Nigerians live, work, and aspire.
Having served as a councilor in Ibadan North Ward 12, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact that participatory governance and responsive leadership can have on communities.
It is at the local level that policies must resonate with the people’s needs and aspirations.
This Democracy Day, I renew my commitment to championing legislation and initiatives that uplift the everyday citizen, foster transparency, and enhance civic education.
Our democracy is only as strong as the engagement of its citizens, particularly our youth.
To the young people of Nigeria, I say this: your voice matters, your participation is vital. We must empower you with knowledge and opportunities to shape our nation’s future.
Civic responsibility is not optional; it is the foundation of sustainable progress.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic evolution, I commend the resilience of our institutions and the collective efforts of the people of Oyo State to maintain peace and progress through credible electoral processes.
I also salute the visionary leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde and others who prioritize inclusive governance and community development.
Nigeria’s democracy may face imperfections, but it remains our greatest asset.
Let us honor it by protecting it, nurturing it, and working tirelessly to build a united, just, and prosperous Nigeria.
