Nurses begin seven-day nationwide strike Tuesday

Nurses in Nigeria will begin a seven-day nationwide strike on Tuesday, following a notice issued by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM). This notice demands improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for nurses.

The decision comes after a 15-day ultimatum expired with no meaningful response from the Federal Government or the Federal Ministry of Health. The strike, starting at 12 PM on Tuesday, July 29, will entail a complete withdrawal of services across all federal health institutions.

NANNM emphasized the essential role of nurses, who provide 60-70% of hospital services, and rejected a June 27 circular from the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission. The association called for adjustments to various allowances and urged the government to engage positively to support the nursing workforce, which is vital for quality healthcare in Nigeria.
