Hulk Hogan, Pro Wrestling Superstar and TV Personality, Dies at 71

Hulk Hogan, a 12-time world champion in pro wrestling and a prominent TV personality, has passed away at the age of 71, as confirmed by WWE.

In a statement released to PEOPLE on Thursday, July 24, WWE expressed its sadness about the loss, stating, “WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan played a crucial role in helping WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”

TMZ was the first to report the news, stating that emergency medical personnel were dispatched to Hogan’s home in Florida after he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest. He was taken out on a stretcher.

Hogan, known as the boastful wrestling icon, film star, and reality TV personality, was a two-time inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame. His first induction was in 2005, with friend Sylvester Stallone presenting him, and he was inducted again in 2020 as part of a wrestling team. Standing at either 6’6″, 6’7″, or perhaps even 6’8″—he enjoyed exaggeration—and weighing over 300 pounds, Hogan was famously dubbed “Wrestling’s Top Banana” in a 1985 Sports Illustrated cover story featuring both him and “Mat Mania!”

In a 2025 article, Sports Illustrated noted, “Hulk Hogan is to pro wrestling what Babe Ruth was to baseball. Hogan elevated the industry to new heights and established it as the multi-billion dollar business it is today. Without ‘The Hulkster,’ wrestling wouldn’t be where it is in the modern era.”

For 35 years, until his retirement in 2012, Hogan was known for his theatrical performances. With his “24-inch pythons” (biceps), he could easily overpower his opponents, including Sgt. Slaughter, André the Giant, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
